Sinkholes and Their Impact

Return to Blog

Sinkholes are becoming an increasingly common concern. Sinkholes sudden appearance can cause significant disruptions for businesses. Recently, sinkholes have affected various regions in our local area, including the Berkshire Mall here in Berks County. While this particular situation has raised awareness, sinkhole issues extend far beyond one location and can be a serious threat to commercial properties. For property owners and business leaders, it’s essential to understand the causes of sinkholes, how they can affect operations, and how to address them proactively.

What Causes Sinkholes?

Sinkholes are a natural phenomenon that occurs when underground cavities form and the ground above collapses into them. This typically happens when water, often groundwater, erodes the rock layers beneath the surface. While limestone is most commonly associated with sinkhole formation, other rock types can also be affected by water infiltration. In areas with significant groundwater flow, the erosion process can gradually create large voids that lead to surface collapse.

Several factors contribute to sinkhole formation, including:

  • Natural Erosion: Over time, natural forces like rainwater gradually break down rocks, especially limestone, creating cavities below the ground.
  • Heavy Rainfall and Poor Drainage: Excessive rain can exacerbate erosion by increasing water runoff, which can seep into the ground and accelerate the formation of voids.
  • Construction Activity: Excavation and structural stress from nearby construction projects can destabilize the ground, especially in regions already prone to sinkholes.

For businesses, especially those located in sinkhole-prone areas, it’s crucial to recognize these factors and understand how they could impact their property.

The Impact of Sinkholes on Commercial Properties

Sinkholes can cause significant damage and disruption to local businesses, impacting everything from customer safety to operational efficiency. In high-traffic commercial areas, such as shopping centers and parking lots, sinkholes can cause immediate concerns. These are some of the key ways sinkholes can affect commercial properties:

  • Structural Damage: Sinkholes often cause cracks in the foundation, parking lots, sidewalks, and access roads. These cracks may be a sign of developing sinkhole activity that, if left untreated, could lead to major structural damage.
  • Safety Risks: Sudden sinkhole formation can pose safety hazards for customers and employees, particularly if the sinkhole occurs in high-traffic areas like parking lots or walkways.
  • Operational Disruption: Sinkholes can lead to closures for repairs, leading to loss of revenue and customer inconvenience. As a result, businesses located in sinkhole-prone areas may experience delays in daily operations.

The sinkholes near the Berkshire Mall are just one example of how these issues can disrupt businesses. Local commercial property owners have taken notice of these events, and many are now focusing on mitigating risks to prevent similar occurrences on their properties.

How Sinkholes Are Remediated

Addressing a sinkhole requires a thorough, specialized approach to stabilize the ground and prevent further damage. Sinkhole remediation typically involves several stages, each designed to restore the property’s structural integrity and ensure long-term safety.

  • Site Assessment: A team of specialists conducts a detailed assessment to understand the extent of the damage. This includes evaluating underlying factors such as water drainage, soil composition, and nearby construction that may contribute to sinkhole development.
  • Excavation: The unstable soil and debris are removed from the affected area to prepare the site for stabilization.
  • Backfilling: Once the unstable material is cleared, the area is filled with compacted material such as gravel or concrete to restore a solid foundation.
  • Grouting: For larger or deeper voids, a specialized grout is injected into the gaps to seal them and prevent further erosion.

The remediation process near the Berkshire Mall, particularly at locations like the Target store, required a combination of excavation and grouting techniques to stabilize the ground and restore the site to a safe and functional condition.

Proactive Measures to Prevent Sinkhole Damage

For businesses located in areas that may be prone to sinkholes, taking proactive measures to monitor and maintain the stability of the ground is essential. Early detection and preventative measures can save businesses from costly repairs and long-term disruptions. Here are a few strategies businesses can use to protect themselves:

  • Routine Inspections: Regularly inspect the property for early signs of sinkhole activity, such as cracks in the foundation, uneven pavement, or depressions in the ground. Identifying potential sinkhole activity early can help prevent major damage.
  • Proper Drainage Maintenance: Ensuring that your property’s drainage systems are functioning correctly is crucial for preventing excess water runoff, which can contribute to sinkhole formation.
  • Monitoring Ground Conditions: Keep an eye on soil stability, particularly in areas with known sinkhole activity. Installing monitoring equipment or consulting experts periodically can provide early warning signs of developing issues.

The recent sinkholes near the Berkshire Mall are an important reminder of the need for proactive monitoring. Businesses in Berks County and beyond should stay vigilant and take steps to protect their property from the risks associated with sinkhole formation.

The Power of Seismic Refraction

Return to Blog

The Strength of Our Team at Berg Construction

At Berg Construction, our team brings diverse skills that enable us to approach projects with innovation. One standout capability is our expertise in seismic refraction, a geophysical method that accurately analyzes subsurface conditions and enhances project efficiency and safety. With a dedicated staff geologist as our Director of Geotechnology, we stand out as one of the few companies in the Northeast equipped to utilize this technology effectively.

Understanding Seismic Refraction

Seismic refraction is the oldest geophysical technology still in use today. Its origins date back to World War I, but it gained popularity as a prospecting method in the 1920s and 30s due to its successes in the Gulf region. This method initially aided oil exploration, enabling the detection of salt domes in the United States, mapping large structures in Iran, and discovering oil fields in the Algerian Sahara.

Moreover, the primary advantage of seismic refraction lies in its non-invasive nature. It provides a ‘snapshot’ of what lies beneath the surface without requiring drilling or heavy equipment. This aspect is particularly useful in our industry, where understanding subsurface conditions significantly impacts project planning and execution.

How Seismic Refraction Works

The seismic refraction process consists of several key steps and equipment:

  1. Geophones Setup: We deploy 24 geophones in grounding groups of 12, placing them in a straight line with equal spacing of typically three feet apart. These geophones connect to a receiver.
  2. Generating Seismic Waves: A seismic wave generates when we strike an aluminum plate on the ground with a heavy tool. This tool triggers a signal to the receiver, releasing the sound wave.
  3. Recording Data: The geophones record the arrival times of seismic waves at various locations. By measuring these times, we calculate the speed of seismic waves through different subsurface materials.
  4. Interpreting Density Changes: Seismic waves travel at speeds proportional to the density of the material they pass through. When density changes occur, the wave velocity also changes. We detect these changes by observing the variations in arrival times recorded by the geophones.
  5. Software Analysis: We process the collected data using specialized software to generate density maps of the subsurface materials. These maps provide insights into the composition and structure of geological layers.

Field Operations and Challenges

Our geotechnical surveys typically involve multiple soundings, usually between seven and eight, at different locations. This necessity arises because our region’s subsurface is highly diverse, featuring varying geology, including rocks and soils. Consequently, the complexity of the subsurface requires careful planning and interpretation to ensure accurate results.

Applications in Earthmoving and Construction

Seismic refraction data proves invaluable in assessing the rippability of the ground by earthmoving equipment. Manufacturers like Caterpillar, Komatsu, and John Deere rate their machines’ rippability based on seismic velocity. This information helps us determine the most suitable equipment for various materials, ultimately improving efficiency and reducing costs.

For instance, understanding subsurface conditions can prevent unexpected encounters with rock layers that slow production. By using seismic refraction, we identify whether explosives are necessary or if a more cost-effective solution exists.

Benefits for Project Planning

Utilizing seismic refraction in project planning offers numerous benefits:

  • Risk Reduction: By gaining a clear understanding of subsurface conditions, we reduce uncertainties that might impact project costs and timelines.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Knowing subsurface conditions helps avoid unnecessary excavation or explosive use, potentially saving significant expenses.
  • Environmental Friendliness: This technology generates essential data without disturbing the environment, making it an eco-friendly option for subsurface exploration.

Comparison with Other Technologies

Seismic refraction complements other geophysical methods like ground-penetrating radar (GPR). While GPR effectively detects objects like pipes underground, seismic refraction provides detailed information about geological structure and density of materials. Together, these technologies offer a comprehensive understanding of subsurface conditions.

Practical Example

Consider a scenario where a company evaluates a piece of land for potential development. Without disturbing the site, we can use seismic refraction to gather crucial subsurface information. This non-invasive approach aids in making informed decisions about land purchases, minimizing risks and costs associated with unforeseen ground conditions.

Conclusion

Seismic refraction remains a versatile and effective technique integral to modern geophysical exploration and engineering projects. Its ability to provide valuable insights into subsurface conditions makes it a critical tool in our industry. Specifically, it enables us to anticipate and address potential challenges before they arise, ensuring smoother and more efficient project execution. By leveraging this technology, we help our clients make informed decisions, manage risks, and optimize project outcomes.

Addressing Subsurface Challenges

Return to Blog

Sinkholes are geological phenomena that can strike unexpectedly, causing disruptions for property owners, utility companies, and the surrounding community. In Southeastern Pennsylvania, where limestone and karst topography shape the landscape, sinkholes present recurring concerns that demand comprehensive remediation efforts.

At Berg Construction, our expertise in sinkhole remediation extends across both our residential and commercial divisions, allowing us to gain valuable experience in addressing diverse sinkhole formations and employing effective techniques.

Understanding Sinkholes: Causes and Consequences

Sinkholes emerge when underground limestone dissolves, creating cavities that weaken the earth’s surface. Heavy rainfall, underground water movement, and human activities can all trigger sinkhole formation. In Pennsylvania, with its abundance of limestone deposits, the risk of sinkhole development is particularly high. The consequences vary from minor surface disruptions to significant structural damage, posing risks to infrastructure, homes, natural habitats, and more. Recognizing the signs of sinkhole formation early on is crucial for implementing timely remediation measures.

Assessment and Site Evaluation: The Crucial First Steps in Sinkhole Remediation

The remediation of sinkholes is a complex process that requires a deep understanding of subsurface conditions and potential risks. Comprehensive assessment and site evaluation serve as the initial steps in planning effective remediation strategies. These steps are crucial for several reasons.

Sinkholes often develop due to geological factors such as soluble bedrock, underground water movement, and soil composition. Without a thorough assessment, it’s challenging to pinpoint these subsurface conditions accurately. Professional geologists and engineers employ various techniques such as ground-penetrating radar and borehole investigations to map out the underground landscape, revealing potential sinkhole risks.

Secondly, pinpointing sinkhole risks in specific areas is essential. Not all areas with limestone deposits are prone to sinkhole formation. Through detailed site evaluations, experts can identify specific areas at higher risk of sinkhole development. This targeted approach allows for more focused remediation efforts, saving time and resources while minimizing unnecessary disruptions.

Furthermore, no two sinkhole remediation projects are alike, and each site presents its own set of challenges. A comprehensive assessment provides valuable insights into the nature and extent of sinkhole risks, enabling engineers to design remediation strategies that address the specific needs of the site. Whether it’s utilizing grouting techniques, soil stabilization methods, or subsurface drainage systems, the remediation plan can be customized to effectively mitigate sinkhole hazards.

The Safety Risks Associated

While we rely on the expertise of engineers for initial assessments, we play a vital role in translating that information into actionable safety measures for our workers and equipment. Working alongside engineers, we develop and enforce rigorous safety protocols tailored to each project, ensuring proper equipment operation, site stabilization, and hazard mitigation.

By taking proactive steps, we work to create a safe working environment that prioritizes the well-being of our team and the success of our jobs. Our dedication to safety in all of our projects reflects our commitment to quality, and our responsibility to protect both our personnel and the communities we serve.

Berg Construction’s Multifaceted Approach to Sinkhole Remediation

Sinkhole remediation requires diverse knowledge in an array of techniques, tailored to specific site conditions and objectives. From grouting and soil stabilization to subsurface drainage systems, each method addresses unique challenges associated with effective sinkhole mitigation.

In a recent sinkhole remediation project within our commercial sector, we faced various challenges, including a compromised storm sewer pipe due to sinkhole development underneath sections of the pipe run. To mitigate future sinkhole occurrences within the stormwater basin, we implemented multiple techniques, including compaction grouting and the application of flowable fill directly into voids.

Utilizing our expertise in sinkhole remediation, we employed compaction grouting to stabilize the subgrade surrounding the pipe run. This technique effectively filled voids and enhanced soil strength, preventing further sinkhole development. Additionally, the application of flowable fill directly into voids played a crucial role in preventing further damage to the area, ensuring the integrity of the stormwater basin.

Our approach to sinkhole remediation encompasses various techniques:

  1. Grouting Techniques: Injecting specialized grout formulations into subsurface voids stabilizes the surrounding soil, preventing further sinkhole development. Cementitious and chemical grouts offer versatile solutions, helping to fill voids and enhance soil strength.
  2. Soil Stabilization Methods: Reinforcing the soil matrix through compaction, soil mixing, and reinforcement techniques minimizes subsidence risks, protecting infrastructure and property. Utilizing geotextiles, geogrids, and soil additives enhances soil cohesion, mitigating sinkhole formation.
  3. Subsurface Drainage Systems: Installing comprehensive drainage networks diverts water away from vulnerable areas, helping to mitigate hydrological risks associated with sinkhole formation. French drains, trenching, and subsurface channels effectively manage groundwater flow, preserving soil integrity and stability.
  4. Natural Remediation Approaches: Eco-friendly remediation strategies such as vegetative cover and land reclamation promote ecological balance, help to restore natural habitats, and minimize environmental impacts associated with sinkhole remediation.

Navigating Towards Sustainable Solutions

In our project, we installed inverted filters and concrete collars to stabilize the storm pipe run, facilitating natural groundwater percolation while preventing excess soil movement. This ensured the long-term stability and safety of the remediated area.

Sinkhole remediation poses challenges that demand innovative solutions and collaborative efforts. By embracing proactive assessment techniques and implementing tailored remediation interventions, we can navigate towards sustainable solutions, mitigating sinkhole risks, and preserving the integrity of our beautiful Southeastern PA landscapes.

Community Helper Day

Return to Blog

Last week, Berg Construction proudly participated in Community Helper Day at Conestoga Christian School.

Alongside local leaders, including the fire department, police, ambulance service, plumbing company, and horse farrier, we had the privilege of engaging with students from kindergarten to third grade. Throughout the morning, we showcased the essential roles each of our businesses plays in the community.

Furthermore, the joy on their faces as they sat in our mini excavator and enthusiastically honked its horn was infectious. Moreover, their fascination with the capabilities of our dump truck mirrored our passion for our craft.

For us, community involvement extends beyond our projects; it’s about building lasting relationships and cultivating growth opportunities for the future. Specifically, introducing young minds to the dynamic world of construction and heavy machinery represents just one facet of our commitment.

In addition to this, we dedicate ourselves to fostering a robust workforce through initiatives like internships, co-op programs, and on-site training for newcomers to the field. Consequently, we aim to create pathways for career advancement within our local community.

At Berg Construction, we understand the significance of the trades and the hard-working individuals who fuel them. That’s why we continuously shine a spotlight on their contributions. On days like Community Helper Day, we are reminded of the importance of nurturing and encouraging future community helpers.

As we reflect on this memorable day, we are grateful for the opportunity to shape the minds and aspirations of the next generation. Together, we can build a brighter tomorrow.

This month at Berg Construction, we held our Annual Safety Day. This vital event marks our transition from the slow winter season to the busy spring and summer months. This year’s focus was on training to reinforce our commitment to safety, ensuring that our team is prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

During our Annual Safety Day, our team engaged in various training sessions designed to enhance skills and knowledge. We covered essential topics such as small tools, retrieval systems, CPR, fire prevention, temporary traffic controls, and OSHA recordability. Mentorship in the Construction Industry

Return to Blog

job site mentorship

In the ever-evolving world of the construction trade industry, where every project presents unique challenges and demands diverse skills, mentorship acts as the foundation for professional development. Unlike a simple transfer of information, mentorship embodies the essence of ‘tribal knowledge,’ representing the collective wisdom passed down through generations of seasoned veterans. It’s a journey of growth that comes from the time and effort invested by both parties—the mentor and the mentee.

In this blog post, we will delve into the importance of mentorship in both the construction trade and Berg Construction ethos, exploring how it fosters skill development, instills industry wisdom, and ultimately contributes to the growth of both individuals and the sector as a whole.

Skill Development:

The construction trade is multifaceted, demanding a broad range of skills from its workforce. Mentorship provides a structured environment for individuals to acquire and refine these skills. It’s more than just guidance; it’s an apprenticeship where seasoned mentors share technical expertise and the nuances and unwritten rules that textbooks can’t replicate.

In the excavation business specifically, the mentorship journey involves more than just mastering heavy machinery; it’s about understanding the intricacies and unspoken insights that come with experience. Foremen impart not only project management expertise but also the softer skills crucial for navigating the dynamic construction environment. Laborers, the mainstay of any project, benefit from mentorship by acquiring hands-on skills and imbibing the safety protocols and cultural nuances that define the trade. This collaborative approach creates a shared responsibility for mentorship, contributing to the well-rounded development of those in the trade and ensuring they have the right ‘tools’ for success.

Knowledge Transfer:

In an industry where methods, materials, and technology are constantly evolving, the transfer of knowledge from experienced mentors to eager mentees is invaluable. Mentorship is not just an exchange of facts; it’s a transmission of insights gained through years of on-the-job experience. Mentors, acting as living encyclopedias of industry wisdom, contribute to the industry’s collective intelligence, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

This authentic knowledge transfer ensures the preservation of traditional craftsmanship while integrating innovative practices that drive the construction trade forward. It’s a realistic acknowledgment that progress is not just about embracing the new but also about cherishing and understanding the foundations laid by those who came before.

Professional Networking:

Mentorship extends beyond skills and knowledge; it’s a gateway to valuable professional networks. It’s not just about making connections; it’s about being part of a community where relationships are built on genuine interactions and shared experiences. Seasoned professionals open doors for those entering the construction trade, connecting them with key players, suppliers, and potential employers.

Referring to professional networking, Berg Construction stands out as a people-focused company, where relationships are not just a means to an end but a fundamental aspect of our core values. Our commitment to building meaningful connections extends beyond the boundaries of project timelines and contracts. Berg Construction takes pride in actively engaging with professionals and businesses in the community, recognizing the symbiotic relationship between business success and the community’s collective growth.

Building Confidence and Resilience:

Navigating the challenges of the construction trade requires more than just technical skills—it demands resilience and confidence. From unpredictable weather conditions to the complexities of on-site problem-solving, the construction trade is rife with hurdles. In this context, every project becomes a testament to teamwork and a living example of how mentorship plays a crucial role in developing mutual support and shared responsibility.

In our mentorship aspirations at Berg, we seek to instill the fundamental ideologies that shape our approach to overcoming adversity. We believe in looking beyond quick fixes and emphasizing the importance of solving problems unerringly, even if it takes longer. This commitment to creating thoughtful solutions becomes a cornerstone for developing the problem-solving skills crucial for success in the construction trade.

The Roots of Mentorship for Berg Construction:

As the construction trade advances, mentorship stands out as a fundamental factor in shaping the future. Transferring skills and knowledge and cultivating professional networks contribute to the growth of individuals and the industry.

At Berg Construction, the importance of mentorship is rooted in the ‘tribal knowledge’ handed down through generations and comes to life through the personal commitments of our individuals. Through our daily endeavors, we understand that achieving consistency in mentorship is an ongoing journey. However, as we learn and adapt, mentorship is a linchpin in growing careers, fostering professional development, and building a sustainable legacy in the construction trade.

Ford Berg Interview on Dirt Talk Podcast

Return to Blog

Podcast Appearance

Berg Construction CEO Ford Berg was recently the special guest on the Dirt Talk podcast, hosted by BuildWitt‘s Aaron Witt. Below are the show notes and the link to the podcast:

Podcast Insights

“Listen, we don’t expect you to know all this stuff. Ask — there are people with much more experience here who are here to support you. But the minute you say, ‘I got this, and I know this,’ you own that. And if you can’t do that, then that’s a problem. We want you to ask for help and give you whatever support we can, but if you try to be too confident and it doesn’t work, then there’s a different conversation that has to be had.”

Early Years and Education

From a young age, Ford and his siblings napped in the family camper while their parents worked hard to grow their logging business. Their home-schooling, hard work, and family time blended together, helping Ford understand what it takes to get the job done right.

While attending Temple University, Ford followed in his parents’ footsteps and launched his first business. He performed environmental tests in residential developments between classes with his younger brother, Luke. Additionally, during the winters, when construction slowed, he began chasing snow removal jobs to maintain steady cash flow.

Making Sacrifices

As the business expanded, CEO, Ford made a significant decision. He left college just three classes shy of graduation to focus on building Berg into what it is today.

Current Success

Sixteen years later, Berg Construction manages a diverse range of services. These include heavy civil construction, municipal utility work, commercial and residential site development, road construction, asphalt paving, and landfill construction projects. Remarkably, the entire family — including Ford’s parents — works for the company.

The Berg Model

The Berg model is simple: find incredibly talented people with prior business ownership experience and allow them to lead their divisions. Currently, Berg Construction supports four different divisions, each with talented leadership teams and a dedicated workforce. This approach fosters growth and strengthens the company’s commitment to excellence in every project.
