Community Helper Day Year Two

Showing Up for Year Two

Last week, we had the privilege of returning to Conestoga Christian School for our second year participating in Community Helper Day—an annual event that brings together local professionals to share what they do with students in grades Pre-K through 3rd. It’s an event that sparks curiosity and reminds us why investing in the next generation is so important.

As an organization, it’s important to us to make time to participate in community events like Community Helper Day, because they help us plant seeds for the future of the construction industry. And part of that future is standing just a few feet tall, with big eyes, endless questions, and boundless enthusiasm.

Whether it’s a skid steer, mini excavator, or backhoe—the kids love getting behind the controls, and we love to see it. In fact, it’s often the kids that get to explaining how each machine works, what it’s used for, and how their dad, or grandfather let them help run similar equipment around the yard or farm. That kind of connection brings everything full circle.

A Village of Helpers

The school invited a whole lineup of local ‘Community Helpers’ who serve various aspects of our community in essential ways:

  • EMS crews showed off ambulances and spoke about emergency response

  • Deihm’s Disposal demonstrated the role of waste management

  • Caernarvon Fire Company brought a fire truck and gear to inspire future first responders

  • The local police department and their K9 unit sparked lots of “oohs” and “ahhs”

  • A local dentist gave students a closer look at oral health tools

  • A pilot talked about aviation and the importance of safety

Each visitor brought something different to the table, and together, we offered a full picture of what it means to serve, build, and protect a community.

Why It Matters

Events like Community Helper Day are more than feel-good photo ops. The trades are facing a generational gap, with fewer young people entering construction, excavation, and skilled labor. But when we show up and explain what we do in terms kids can understand—and get them excited about—it helps us, slowly but surely, to close that gap.

Maybe they’ll remember the excavator they saw up close. Maybe they’ll remember someone taking the time to talk to them about teamwork, or how rewarding it is to build something from the ground up. That memory could become a career one day. And that’s why we do what we do.

Investing in the Future

At Berg Construction, we believe in giving back to the communities we work in—not just through jobs and infrastructure, but through education, mentorship, and visibility. We want young people to know that the trades are full of opportunity, growth, and purpose.

Whether they become laborers, equipment operators, project managers, or business owners, these kids represent the future of our industry. And by meeting them where they are—at school, on their level—we give them a glimpse of what’s possible.

Thank You, Conestoga
