Q: What is your role here at Berg, and what are your typical responsibilities?
A: I do payroll for Berg Construction, and I’ve been with the company since May 2015. Some typical tasks for me include reconciliations, payroll management, and invoicing residential projects. I started working at Berg before graduating high school so, aside from a job at a daycare during school, my entire professional career has been here.

Q: What are the main challenges of your position?
A: I would say communication. I live in Ohio and I work entirely remotely. Knowing what’s going on at a job site is a challenge, and it can also be tricky when new prevailing wage jobs start. I need to stay on top of knowing when things change and just making sure I’m in the loop. I make lots of phone calls and send lots of emails.

Q: What do you enjoy about your job?
A: I love the environment. It’s family-friendly and everybody knows everybody. Even now that I’ve been working remotely, I still feel like I have good relationships with everyone at Berg.

Q: When did you shift to working remotely?
A: I worked at the Berg offices until December 2018. It was definitely a change! I used to be the go-to for everything around the office, but I think they’ve figured out everything they need to do to get by without me being there in person. I will say that my workdays now are kind of quiet though!

Q: Are there any parts of your job that you’re especially proud of?
A: Yes, definitely. When I first started, the company was entirely paper-based. We did not have anything filed electronically. The first summer I worked here in 2015, that was my job. I had to put together a process to digitally transfer all of our employee files and job files from when the company first started.

That’s really what I was originally hired to do — organize everything in a way that everyone still knew where everything was. I think everyone’s glad I did it because now it’s so much easier when, for example, we get information about someone that filed for unemployment, and we can easily pull up his timecards and see the last day he clocked out.

Q: Do you have any ideas for how our industry could do a better job of attracting young people?
A: We need to keep things more personal. It’s important to feel like you’re part of something larger than yourself, instead of just showing up, doing your job, and going home. This industry can be too impersonal, and I don’t think young people today are looking for that.

Here at Berg, we have employee outings where people can bring their families. We’ve gone to baseball games, we’ve gone to an amusement park a couple of times, we occasionally do lunch for employees, we have a Christmas party — those things let everyone feel like they’re part of this company.

Q: Is there anyone in your life that you consider to be a mentor?
A: Our CFO Bryan Naranjo has definitely been a mentor to me. When I first started, I was working here part-time while also attending community college. I started helping Bryan with some things, and he taught me how to use QuickBooks, how to create and file invoices — stuff like that.

Eventually, I realized that I was learning more from working with Bryan than I was sitting in the classroom. I ended up dropping out and started working full-time here. Bryan absolutely helped lead me to where I am today.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I’m engaged, which is the reason I moved out here to Norwalk, Ohio, in the first place. In my free time, I actually love to drag race.
